About our school

Jilliby Public School was established in 1889. The school is situated 10 minutes from Wyong on the Central Coast and serves the semi rural community of Jilliby.

The students are drawn mainly from hobby farms or large residential block developments in a 10 kilometre radius from the school.

Most students travel to school along a single bus route. Jilliby Public School aims to work with families to develop the whole child, academically, socially, physically and emotionally.

In a safe, friendly and supportive environment, students are encouraged to enjoy learning, to play enthusiastically, to believe in their own worth and to show a concern for their environment.

Bunya Pine

Jilliby Public School's emblem is the Bunya Bunya Pine. The tree was adopted as the emblem in 1889 and a seed was planted in the school grounds by the then principal Mr William Baldwin. Although not a native tree to the Dooralong Valley the tree has thrived and grown into a splended specimen at the front of our school grounds.

The Bunya can grow to a height of 30, to 40m. The tree produces large Bunya cones which can grow to 30cm long and weigh upto 10kg. These cones contain edible seeds with the largest harvest being achieved every three years in the months of January to March. The edible nuts were enjoyed by the Aboriginal tribes that inhabitated the Nambour, Gympie and Bunya Mountains area.

The Bunya harvest period was a time of feasting and ceremonies. The nuts were eaten raw when fresh, roasted, boiled and pounded to make a kind of bread. Today the nuts are considered as a versatile bush food for cooking.
